Tailing the Komets

Are you upset about this?

1. It's bold, honest and unique.

2. The team really doesn't need to market to the diehards (and I define that as anyone who takes the time to read or write on this blog) because they know you'll show up anyway. You may threaten, complain, whatever, but you'll also be there because you are always there. It's part of who you are. I also think there are fewer of you than there were 20 years ago. We can debate all day why that is.

3. They are marketing to the folks who are not already planning to be there, and that's definitely the target audience of that ad. It will definitely get their attention.

4. It's also completely true. Look at the TinCaps. The vast majority of the market is the disposible income, family looking for an inexpensive good time, who go 8-10 times per year. That's who the ad will get. You've got to have a theme to attract casual fans to games today, and the Komets do that very well.

5. It's a discussion-starter and will get people talking, which is what marketing is all about.

Very, very interesting. I don't necessarily like it, but it's not going after me. It is bold and very effective and will do what it is designed to.

This reminds me of those...lol

I am sitting here reading this and shaking my head....like a bobble head.

I yelled all season at Bertram "Hit Somebody!!! you bobblehead".......LOL

I don't see the team quadrupling the amount of bobbleheads they make for a STH giveaway. As JR pointed out, there seems to be many creative and cost effective ways to make a gesture to the STH's.....I would guess those would be explored before any significant giveaway.

They did an Icy beanie years ago. It wasn't an official "Beanie Baby" but it was the same thing.

I think they need to make voodoo dolls of opposing players; but instead of pins, they make little hockey sticks to poke the hockey player voodoo doll with...

They could have Hit dress up like a witch doctor and hand them out at the door....

The next bobble head needs to be of Hit sitting in his seat with his cardboard cutout next to him.......

Or one of the twister; but instead of his head bobbling they could make his butt bobble.....

A Twister Bobble Butt!!!

I must admit you guys are very funny! You just don't have enough things to keep you busy. It is very interesting reading. LOL :) Mean while "Super Fan" is raking up the hits and that means $$$.

Shhhhh! Dont talk sooo loud Dennis.... If they hear you, they'll make me do more around here at work and then I wont have the time to come with such excellent STH gift ideas.... Some times during a 12hr night shift, this is the only thing that keeps me sane...lol

Really though, who wouldnt camp out days in advance for a Twister Bobble Butt??? I know Hit and his cardboard cutout would...

Can't wait to see Bertie back in the stands with us common folks.. I remember the night he was going to bust some 16 year old kids head because he got a little to rowdy for Bert's liking. The stare was on!

I think instead of increased security for bobbleheads they should have absolutely none. Just make a big pile in the MC lobby unlock the doors at 6 and let bodies hit the floor. The whole thing is already a joke, might as well let it get the rest of the way out of hand. They could put a ten tooth minimum on it though.. that would eliminate some of the line jumpers. I'd be willing to give mine to Kevin Holliday if he showed up, he's the only deserving party that would be excluded by the rule.

I think Twister will make a run at this bobblebutt idea now.. I think we should have one of Ian Boyce punching Twister in the jaw. Weren't they having some verbal sparing a couple of years ago?

Who will be this years bobblehead? Nick and Guy have been done. Chaulk is gone. (How did we never have a Chaulk bobblehead?) I'm guessing it will be PC. Hopefully it'll be sponsored by 3 Rivers Insurance. Will it be a fully bobblehead or be missing 30% :-) I vote for Leo Thomas, or Bangin' Bobby Phillips. Bobby is an avid fisherman, maybe that could be incorporated. Or a Komet legend.. Steve Fletcher, Colin Chin...

JR-Do you mean you don't already do voodoo dolls of opposing players? I got the idea after I found out my former wife was doing it to me. The hockey sticks are a good idea, would save me from having to mail order the needles from a special place in New Orleans.

JM-The ten-tooth comment put me on the floor and you beat me to an Ian Boyce comment. Twister's supposedly the reason Ian rarely shows up at games but that's something I heard, don't know if it's fact or not, I've never actually asked him about it.

Chaulk should definitely have been one. IMO the only way Bertram got one is because it was open voting on the Komets web site that year and the whole fire department must have spent all their house time sitting at computers voting for him.

Steve - hope your post was kidding and you were just joking.. if so good one.. if not.. is everyone suppose to believe the salary cap is followed because there has been a recent discussion about it? Glad that is all cleared up now. Did all owners come together and pinky swear? If so i feel sooooo much better about it. Or did we simply use scouts honor? No fingers crossed or anything right? You really believe Frankes or any owners would have told Blake or any other reporter that "yes.... we still find ways to cheat.. go print that for me" ..

Dschebig

It is really very simple to monitor salary caps. Team payrolls are sent to the League office. The books are open for inspection by League officials. The UHL did it by managing writing the checks. Teams must send contracts to the League as well. Players may earn extra monies with public appearances or indorcements. Having said that I am sure there are ways around the money issue but not with their contracts.

komets123
Tue, 08/24/2010 - 2:21pm

Dschebig - I agree with you that the contracts are likely all in line. I would hope so anyways.

I am by far a conspiracy theorist on any level, but in cases like this i have seen far too often teams abusing caps in some way. Crafty business owners find ways to convince players to come aboard one way or another. I doubt it is with good looks and charm. I am also sure it isn't the cities tradition and best fans in the world that brought em in.. every city has the "best tradition and fan base" ... amazingly..

komets123--The CBA ,which to my knowledge no one has seen as of yet, may have some clauses in it that may or may not help players out to some degree. Per Diems, Meal money, housing those kind of things. There must be other ways to milk the system like you say. "Super Fan" is correct players, no matter how loyal, go to another place and just do not know how to keep their mouths shut. I am not a great conspiracy theorist. I do believe the Komet management does follow the rules and contracts.

komets123
Tue, 08/24/2010 - 3:59pm

Dshebig - Komets management may indeed be completely honest and follow the cap. I would not be surprised either way i suppose. I certainly wouldn't want to try to "investigate" it. If media broke one day and said most teams in minor league hockey break the rules i would shrug and say "figures" ..

You are likely right on the CBA, per diems, meals, housing.. all that great stuff. also I agree with you on players are pretty good at keeping their mouths shut.. so i agree with 98% of your post.. only area im a little off is i am not quite so confident in the Frankes rules following.. hope nobody jumps me for accusing the Franks.. i did NOT say that... am not accusing them... just believe it is a very real possibility and wouldn't need an oxygen mask applied asap to bring me to if the news broke.

Being reported that the Thunder have hired Jason Christie to be thier new coach... This is a home run hire for Bloomington, IMO...

Sounds like he may be bringing some kind of affiliation with the Islanders with him...

Bobble heads... how about a run of one a year of everyone who has a retired number? Maybe a second one of a current player..

Tue, 08/24/2010 - 9:30pm

Snuff, when they do the legends do they make them look like they did in the day or the way they look now? :-)

Both given out at the same time? I hate the thought of fighting that mess twice in a year.

Steve, I was thinking 2 different promotions. Honestly do them on a week night because those games don't tend to normally draw well anyway. So they might actually result in a boost in ticket sales, not just a chaotic scene at the door.

As for how they should look.... well... I don't want to decide wrong and have Fletch come after me lol.

as a sth i would like the k's to workout a deal with the barn for free parking or a way to buy a season parking pass at a reduced price. id also like to get a bobblehead or maybe something other than the hassle of an orange crowd card. heck, being sick this last season i wasnt even able to pick up the last years prizes or this years and i bet then arent there anymore!

I vote that all red-headed hockey chicks get bobbleheads too....what the heck. I'll jump in on this. I come early, camp my kid out w/his DS and just do it. Don't you have vacation time from work, Hit? Use it! Hockey is what vacation time was made for, my good man! If these things mean so much to you, then go early like the rest of us who do and get you one. I only go because my son collects everything and anything Komets....you should see his room. Why should he and I get screwed out of that because I am not a STH? As for those who you see walking around holding tons of them....well, ever think they might be carrying their entire family's stash? I have had to walk around carrying 3 while the boys were in the bathroom. People gave me crappy looks, but hey. Tough. I got here early, and you did not. That's really all there is to it. STHs already get cheaper tickets than the walkup crowd, and you get your seats back each season and get to kick people out who try to sit where they are not suppose to be. Not enough of a benefit for you? Are you going to watch a game or get some stupid prize, like a keychain or thundersticks, people? Priorities....
