Butt out

Here we go. Everywhere but in the home, and can that be far behind?

Belmont is set to make history by becoming the first city in the nation to ban smoking on its streets and almost everywhere else.

The Belmont City Council voted unanimously last night to pursue a strict law that will prohibit smoking anywhere in the city except for single-family detached residences. Smoking on the street, in a park and even in one's car will become illegal and police would have the option of handing out tickets if they catch someone.

Talk about "public health" all you want, but smoking bans are becoming about much more than that.

Next thing you know, they'll ban smoking marijuana everywhere. Oh . . . wait. Actually I wonder if the anti-smoking movement will ever join forces with the War on (Some) Drugs.

They might, until they realize there is a slight difference between secondhand smoke and a contact high.

"In one's car" seems a step too far to me. I can't see why they don't at least permit smoking "ALONE in one's car" as a matter of individual rights.

This isn't a joke to me, however. After doing without places where smoking is permitted, my latest band played at a club the other night where the smoke burned the eyes and throat. A good time was had by all, but I've been coughing up old familiar junk for about a week now, and it reminds me why second hand smoke is a genuine health concern for non-smokers.
