I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I come across words I don't know all the time, even in hockey blogs. If I was going out of my way to use "big words", that would be arrogant, but "perfunctory" is a common word, and you know it as well as I do. In your case, I will continue to point out that the real arrogance is in assuming that readers of a hockey blog are somehow of lower intelligence than everyone else. But hey, keep feeling free to talk down to people. They like that. They really do.
And yes, "perfunctory" is exactly what I meant. No, that isn't always the case. But it just seems like a lot of fights are like the "Wolf and Sheepdog" cartoons. "Ah well, guess we better do this..." And afterward, "Good fight. So... Same time next week?"
