The deal

Opinions are all over the map on the Obama-Republican compromise. I paid particular attention to conservative thought, which is anything but unanimous. The Club for Growth is against it. Jim DeMint expresed mixed feelings then came out against it. National Review is cautiously optimistic. I think Paul Ryan has it about right:

All things considered, I think it's the best deal we were going to get,” he says. “It's clearly not a good as we would've wanted, but far better than the alternative route.”

Because of how many billions this will "cost" the federal government, there will be more pressure on the spending-cut side, so maybe we'll see how fiscally responsible the Republicans really are.

I'd like the GOP to be in charge of all three branches of government. That way, I could sit back and watch them eliminate the deficit by increasing military spending while cutting taxes.
It worked so well for Reagan and Dubya.

Reagan did not have a majority in the House in any two-year period during his presidency, which severely limited the extent to which he could close down spending ... which was minuscule anyway when compared to the spending when the Democrats took control of the House and Senate in 2007. Tax rate reductions by both Reagan and Bush II boosted economic growth and increased the government's take and indeed financed "Bush's" war and encouraged Dodd and Bawney Fwank to illogically push for unsound mortgage loans.

Seems those tax hikes on the rich by Clinton did wonders for the the government's bottom line and the economy.
