By the way.... wouldn't it be great if this Komets/Evansville thing turned into a bit of a nasty rivalry like they used to have with the Ice? It has potential.

That's exactly my point.. Why should Molle have to "Stand up to" Sgroi? Our guys always get credit for "standing up" to a bigger opponent. Doesn't that tell you something? When is the last time a team said "well Fort Wayne beat us but at least we stood up to their tough guys"? I can't remember any instance in the past few years.

All I'm saying is that for this game Evansville was bigger, faster, and better coached than our team.
Yes, it was only one game but I don't anticipate them getting any smaller, slower, or any less well coached between now and next Saturday. Will they beat us every time we play? No, but they have definately put together a far superior team so far.

Yes, it would be very nice to have a good rivalry.

Evansville looks REALLY good....right now..... They are an older team, how are they gonna look come February/March when some of these 'older' bodies have taken a beating for @3-4 months???

How good could the K's look by February??? A couple peices, some rookie maturing, line tweaking/gelling....who knows???

Its all speculative at this point....

JR1,

You are correct. They could be great by February but they better not wait too long as only 8 teams make the playoffs this season! Thought most of this work would have been done during the summer.

I agree Whole....

Thats why I think they are still a couple peices away from being 'complete'.... I think one player could be on IR right now in Starenky (not somuch in his toughness; but for his front of Boucher presence)...

30 days from now, they had better be well on their way to making this organization/fan base proud or there will be a flurry of moves made, IMO...

I agree with Starenky. He will hopefully bring much needed toughness in our defensive zone and in front of the net.

But we need more than 1 guy on the team that can do that. I remember what Colt King did to us on the PP last year. No one could challenge him in front of our net. We need guys like him that are big and physical and willing to pay the price in front of the net.

I put most of the blame for this loss squarely on the GM. This is Davids fault. The team was not ready and Evansville was. For once this is on the GM. The team and players were not ready to play compared to EVV, however if David wants to wait for players to filter down through the system this is the price you pay. Poor GM move.

Monkey see, monkey do....IMO Whole...

Llewelyn, and both Molles will bo do whats needed to clear the front of the net... I think a quote by Chaulk was spot on in that this team was thinking too much out there and not reacting enough to what Evansville was doing...

Give them a little time...

Agree Tim Hokes thing seemed like an after thought and most people didn't get what it was about. He deserved a pre-game ceremony of some sort that lasted even 1 minute by Larry announcing who he was, what he did, and maybe his family on the ice for a quick pay of respect. I think he meant more to the fans than the Komets obviously. But the Komets should realize that he meant alot more to the Komets than they know. Tim Hoke will be missed.

I agree, this was one game.

Evansville was alot more physical than we were and more aggressive going to the net. Our guys couldn't handle their aggressiveness. They out muscled us and out hit us all night long.

I don't care about the fights in that game so much. Checking, going to the net, battles in the corners, doing the dirty work, and we were outskated all night long.

Anyone notice their powerplay versus ours. Our is so slow and all most too relaxed.

Theirs is putting pressure on the D and pressing in towards the middle. Every pass they make, they take 4 -5 steps in towards the net and eventually all of their guesses have pressed in where they are all in front of the net pounded the puck in.

Our PP was PP.

I think Starenky helps. I think Thorne helps. And the lines need help. There are a coupl of guys playing for their life I think.

Leo, Lapointe, Mele, Auger.... One of those guys have to go IMO. Maybe 2.

I think the only thing that could make you feel good about last night would have to be an ice fan... probably not enough beer in MC to make us all forget

One positive I saw...well, heard, was I thought Larry did a great job with the music. Was a nice mixture of newer songs thrown in with the classics

Opening ceremonies: time-wise, much better. Content: much better. Seeing a couple of the older guys on their skates: made me nervous. Seeing them all skate off under their own power: priceless :)

To some extent, I agree that we need more toughness. But for a different reason. Being bigger, stronger, and tougher helped Evansville immensely. They won too many battles for the puck along the boards and in the corner. They took us off the puck in transition and stopped us many times just by putting a body on a guy. I don't care if we find "drop the gloves" toughness. But it'd be nice if we could find guys tough/strong enough to win puck battles.
I know it's just one game, but last night disappointed me. A few guys came to play. But as a whole, I think we didn't have much effort or desire. We got worked on opening night in front of 10,000. Eville wanted it way more and it was obvious. We were sloppy, out of sync, and outworked. Yeah it's early. Blah, blah, blah. Its early for Eville too. And they had no problem showing up to play. I can take a loss. It happens. But, I can't take the lack of effort. We cut PC and we STILL GOT 71% EFFORT.

BLB - the Ks "too many men" penalty was legit. They had 6 skaters actively taking part in the play - not just a slow line change. I was briefly wondering why they had pulled the goaltender

A veteran's lackadaisical approach to hockey was apparent again last night. I just don't see the care/effort whatever you want to call it.

Also, I was very disappointed with the Evansville fans. They were extremely rude especially with letting their young children yell profanities. COOL!

AND with that said, some of our fellow Komet fans were truly classless in telling them to shut up and so forth. I really hate it when other people make me look like an idiot. SO if you are around fans from other teams, please consider those of us who would like our team and ourselves to be respected in the league. GEEZ

Now that I am done complaining...good luck next week Ks.

Long season to go K fans. Hopefully for your sake and not ours they either start to click soon or some changes are made. On a related note I had a blast at the tailgating and meeting some of you. Keith Stone is not that smooth in the morning though!

BTW-kids yelling "sucks" is not profanity =-)

7-3, easy

Dan if they are 3-7 I will be concerned. I believe they will be 5-5. The early season schedule gives them plenty of time to extend "training camp" because of how the schedule is done. For the young guys the more they skate together the more the game will slow down. They won't be in such a hurry to pass the puck, will figure out their spacing and generally look like a team. I wanted a younger team. I understand that means that assuming the coach knows what he is doing (and I believe he does) that this is a team that wil grow and improve together. This season will not be won or lost in the first ten games but I believe you use each block of 10 games as a measuring stick. If you can't compete after 10 you need to make changes. Same goes for 20, 30 etc. I just don't believe in pushing the panic button after one ugly loss, or even two unless you have zero faith in the coaches ability to...coach.

This might be just the problem. They have schedule like last season where everyone else will have played more games early on than the Komets, and we are out of the gates struggling with the thought that we are in "early preseason mode" still.

Why is it that Eville looked like they were into a game plan,

And we looked like we were playing Alley Ball?

Something needs to change.

Jeremy Enright
Sun, 10/23/2011 - 10:00pm

Snuff, I think everyone is reaching for the panic button because we saw a repeat of the same things that plagued the team last year. And those things were never corrected. We watched it all year until the season ended with an early playoff exit. To most, I think it feels like we're picking up right where we left off. We can be optimistic and make excuses for the team. We can pick out certain things that we think will be fixed by game 10. But we should also look at the other team on the ice and wonder why they had it right and were ready to go. If they can figure it out by opening night, shouldn't we have been able to do the same?

Mr Snufflupugus
Sun, 10/23/2011 - 11:33pm

Ok... if you want REAL change....
The coach goes, the goalie goes and the beloved captain goes. If you believe that REAL change is needed then the leadership both on and office ice needs to change and a different goalie needs to be in nets. But are you willing to make those changes? Management was not and at this point since this is the path they chose I have to have faith that past track records of success will return.

You guys know what I think. I would have loved to see Smith as the captain of this team. I think he brings a fresh energy and solid leadership. I would have liked to see a change in nets because I think Boucher is slowing down and when goalies start to lose it, some lose it very quickly. Look at Frenchy after he let here. The Komets let him go just in time.

I think Sims given time will get these kids playing the right way. The game needs to slow down for them. They were playing hot potato with the puck last night which caused many of the bad passes. The more they play together the more they conect.

I really think the problem here is "Change" needs to be made. Right from the coach, Al Sims, to guys like Boucher and Chaulk. These guys are nothing but AA career minor leaguers. Boucher has never played at the next level yet he has the attitude that he's played in the NHL. This organization has to move past the UHL/IHL2 days where it was kind of mickey mouse.

As for toughness, you guys complain about having a guy like Sgroi or any other heavyweight being to unskilled, but maybe it is the coach? These heavyweights have played at higher levels than the CHL so obviously they can contribute more than the so called favourite players here that can't even get a shot at the next level. Some of you make me laugh. Time to let go and start fresh... The UHL/IHL2 days are gone...

Mr Snufflupugus
Mon, 10/24/2011 - 8:37am

Just a Fan in all fairness Sims has reached the top level both as coach and player. That's why I am not ready to write him off. Younger teams take time to develop. You can't expect them to look as sharp as a veteran team right off the bat. The difference between this year and last year is last year was the "same OLD Komets". This is a much more youthful team and as long as the captain and Milam don't plan on being -3 too often, Thomas doesn't wet his pants on a easy scoring chance etc, the vets that are left here will be fine.
