For a good rivalry, there has to be contempt for the other team and/or its players.

Paul Tantardini of the Goaldiggers is a perfect example. He's the kind of player you loved to hate, yell insults at or just boo, but you'd love to have on your team. He was the kind of player to score the big goal at the right time for Toledo.

Scott Gruhl, when he played for Muskegon, in the 1980s is another example. You'd just loathe him when he played against you, but you would love to have him on your roster. He was another Komet killer.

I can't think of any other opposing players (who had great skills) I hated more than those two.

Toporowoski was just big and slow

Two classic examples Jeff. I never got to know Paul but I did Scottie, off the ice he was a very friendly guy. Not a goon at all but someone who would drive you nuts with what he could do to someone when the ref wasn't looking, and then he'd score goals like no tomorrow just to make it hurt more.

Steve and Jeff great points. Without being politically correct here i am sure you remember what the fans call Tantardini? Retardini. Remember when the Komets aquired Joe Nathe. A long time HATED player from Toledo. His first game as a Komets he gets called for tripping then heads directly to the visitor penalty box. I laughed long about that one. Some of those names you mentioned Jeff makes me long for the old days as it just is not the same anymore. This is a different era now and i am not sure i like it nearly as much. Yes all the cups are nice but i miss the intensity that USED to be there. Any further thoughts old time fans??

Looking at this as an old hockey fan from the other end of the Maumee river, I've got to say that I've always seen the Komets as Toledo's biggest rival. I miss those wild nights whenever the K's came to the old arena. To be fair, however, we Toledo fans took PLENTY of abuse from the Komet fans whenever we visited the Coliseum.

I'm not sure we'd see the same kind of rivalry these days. The new downtown arena seems to draw a different kind of crowd...more family oriented. Visiting fans tell me they enjoy coming to games here. It's just a different era, I guess. As for me, I'd love to see the Komets and Toledo back in the same league again.

BTW, Mancy's is still open and as good as ever.
