Tailing the Komets

Franke on moves

No matter who shows up on the transactions page now, Komets General Manager David Franke isn't guaranteeing anyone a roster spot.

``We're going to have more good kids in training camp so there will be genuine competition for jobs this year,'' Franke said. ``Just because you have signed, there are going to be people looking for your job so you have to be ready to go. That makes for competition in training camp and brings out the best in everybody.''

The one thing we have to have is scoring on all three lines. We can't get it done with two line scoring and a checking line. Everybody has to chip in whether in a big way or a litle way. When we've been successful in the past, we've had offense from all three lines.''

Quick hits:

On Franke DeAngelis: Should know something by early next week.

Nothing new on Simon Mangos

Not talking with Brent Henley.

Hope to have the schedule ready to go mid-week next week.

Not sure on Apod right now. He's vacationing in Turkey. Sounds like Komets ahve cooled on

Offer out to both Molle and his brother.

``We probably are talking to at least two dozen players right now minimum that we're going to know something one way or the other in a week or two.''

I think I have their first 8 track tape. I think their first hit was an acoustic version of Welcome to the Jungle with Blake at the vocals.

He looked younger than he actually was. And that was before Botox and Pilates.

I actually like the Komets signings so far. If you look at it like for every 10 guys they sign only 5 or 6 will make roster than I wouldn't think too negatively who they have so far. I think if you look at the centers they have signed its a good start. Add Auger, Boucher and Cescon also and there is the beginnings of a good team. I posted at one time I didn't think the Komets needed to change 13-14 players from last year. I believed a 50% turnover would be necessary. Add Frankie D., Molle and hopefully Apod then let that be the end of last years players. And if not Apod then I would give Curadeau another look. And I am predicting right now that Drouin won't make team. Sorry PC.

I started reading the last 4 years august blog posts so I know ahead of time what everyone will be typing, the names change but pretty much everything else is the same. I want the Komets to have ice scraper night again. Schebig is a great score keeper.

Would you please consider this blog headline:

HOLY MOLLE!!!

Please and Thank you.

Burgee,

Back then the arena didn't have the protective netting....kind of difficult to whack Jimmy Waite on the back of his mask. I know someone who did that back in the day....

Hit,

Time travel is accomplished with a controlled "sling shot" type maneuver while travelling at about Warp 9? A DeLorean just doesn't have the "horsepower".

I was outside for about 10 minutes today....must of fried my brains....lol

I just hope I'm not still wondering about the lack of scoring in August...

Things I do know will happen in August:

1. Talk about Burgee's pills and sun tan oil
2. Hit will change his line combo's about 27,246 times
3. mightbite will update us daily on the league's fighter's signings
4. K's Brass will assure everyone they have 8 players capable of scoring 25-35 goals signed and 4 rookies coming in who will remind us of some Komets legend
5. Some will wonder why we are still talking about the same things every August even tho its painfully obvious...
6. News Sentinel will add about 25 new ads/pop ups...
7. I'll still be missing Tim Hoke...

Seriously, warp , Bob? Tell Captain Picard that his ride is inefficient. Everyone knows you only need to hit 88 mph as long as you can generate the necessary 1.21 gigawatts. Ill tell ya, when that baby hits 88 mph, you're going to see some serious stuff.

Found an interesting article on Sports Illustrated...they've been asking several reporters about the best team that they ever covered. Someone put the '92-93 San Diego Gulls as his best. It talks about the K's upsetting them in the Finals. Good little read.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/best_team_i_ever_covered/07/12/San.Diego.Gulls/index.html

Just to throw out a new question....what is the best Komets team that you've seen? I would have to go with either the '92-93 Komets or maybe the '90-91 Komets. Both teams were able to accomplish things that nobody thought was possible. They really came together as a team and neither was flashy...they just put their nose to the grindstone and got the job done.

I don't have a dog in this cage. But I think the best team might very well have been the 59/60 team.
Really had some great all-time players. Reno Zanier in goal. I know I am going way back but than I am that old. I am not sure it is fair to rate "The Best" team ever. So many things to take into account. We (Komets) have had more than our share of great players on many different teams. The toughest, strongest, best hands, quickest shot and the all important attitude, desire and guts. They all give us great memories that we can hold on too. And yes, I miss Tim Hoke already!

Was ice even invented back then? Or did they use small rocks as wheels on the skates?

Early Bird savings are only $75 this year for STH, compared to $100 in the past. Now the savings are only just above the 70% effort level too!

Burgee is on his way to some island! What he is not aware of yet is the Jamaican Consulate has his name on a "Watch" list. He is illegally importing Foo Foo's. He doesn't play well with others.

Mr. Snuff...Yes, I am that old! I don't remember any double runners on skates, however. I also remember when there was no glass around the boards, just wire fencing. I remember no adds on the side boards or the ice and black & white programs. Those were the days my friends! That was old-time Komet Hockey!

true enough back then it was all about the game and less about the off ice entertainment other than perhaps an organ.
I'd love to see the Komets do a throwback day. Get the redcoats in uniforms worn back in the 50's, have Larry do the announcing the way it was done back then. Have only an organ etc. Maybe wear the first year uniforms.

There have been so many great Komet teams the last fifty-nine years. To pick one over another would just be a matter of opinion, yet the responses probably all are a combination of fact and circumstance which made them special.

Over the last fifty-nine years we have watched the game of hockey change. The Komets, especially from the '59-'60 team, had some pretty entertaining teams ( and personalities). That changed a little with the expansion of the NHL from six to twelve teams in the late '60s. It changed for all of minor league hockey. It changed again with the birth of the WHA. The komets in particular have morphed through changes in leagues also. The original IHL, the "AAA" IHL, the UHL, back to the "AA" IHL and now the CHL. All might play a role in your "favorite team" selection.

I can honestly say that my favorite team was the Turner Cup team of '72-'73. A great combination of skill, toughness, defense, scoring, goaltending, and coaching. From familiar names such as Irons, Balon, Pembroke, Purinton, Thompson, combined with "baby "Penguins" merged and blended into a team that just couldn't be stopped. My favoite player on that team was Brian Walker, but how could you not like Bob Fitchner, Jim Hrycuik, Dean Sherameta, Jeff Ablett, Wayne Ego, Jimmy Pearson, and D'Arcy Keating?

The team had no all-stars but the chemistry it had propelled them to the IHL regular season championship and the Turner Cup, winning eight out of nine playoff games. Marc Boileau did a masterful job as coach. That season's success took him to the NHL as the coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the middle of the next year.

'92-'93 had many of the same traits as the '72-'73 team. No one wanted these players, the coach found himself in the NHL the next season, and they stunned the hockey world by not losing a game in the playoffs including sweeping "the best minor league hockey team ever assembled" in four games.

That would be pretty cool Snuff! Kind of a 'Turn Back the Clock Day'. Sell hotdogs and and a bag of peanuts for like 50 cents a piece and programs for 25 cents. Schebig...no advertisements on the ice or the boards would be awesome...a dream, but awesome!
