Gary

Oh, the danger of being a one-company (or at least one-industry) town. A colleague who grew up in the Region and knows I spent some years there passed along this photo sent to her by a friend of downtown Gary in 1959, before the steel mills closed. That's six lanes in the center of downtown, something even Fort Wayne doesn't have today. You can also see a nice steel-mill haze in the background.

Talk about JOB LOSS...

Only about TEN THOUSAND JOBS were dumped, and that was just in the CIVILIAN sector.

We had thousands of service people transferred elsewhere.

And Philly is STILL reeling from that loss decades ago.
