Opening Arguments

George and Tony

I am overwhelmed with frustration on being confronted, at the same time, with two situations I have absolutely no idea how to solve. (So what's new about that? as my brother might say.)

1. I do not know what to do about Korea. It seems scary to me that an unpredictable whack job now has control of nuclear-weapons technology. Sanctions won't work. Military action seems risky. The best all the world's leaders, in their collective wisdom, seem able to come up with is to talk tough and hope for the best. Though I know I should not feel inadequate for not being able to do better individually than the world leaders collectively, I am sure I will read countless columns in the next few days expounding on exactly what should be done, and I will feel guilty for not joining in.

2. I cannot fathom why the Indianapolis Colts, though being 5-0, cannot seem to play a decent first half and cannot stop the run no matter what they do. If they do not solve these problems, I fear they will break my heart this year even sooner in the season than they did last year. But Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning, possessing two of the extant fine football minds, can't seem to get a handle on them, either, so I certainly have no realistic expectation of figuring things out.

Perhaps you think it outrageous that I would equate Korea and the Colts, but my point is that there are some things that are simply beyond the expertise of people living in Fort Wayne, Ind. Maybe we should let Tony Dungy tackle the Korea problem and give President Bush a shot at fixing the Colts. That's as reasonable as anything else I've heard lately.
