Global struggle against verbal obfuscation

President Bush has asserted himself over the gobbledygook-pushing bureaucrats in the administration who have been trying to change the name of the War on Terror to the Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism. Can you imagine how much less ink and air time the War on Poverty and the War on Hunger would have gotten if they had been called the Global Struggle Against Financial Deprivation and the Global Struggle against Caloric Deficieny? Maybe the Greatest Generation would like to see the name of its war changed to Global Struggle Against Fascist Extremism II. We are in a war, no matter what it's called. "War" is also the perfect headline word.

Do you really think it's a good idea to declare war against abstract concepts? It seems to me to raise the question of how do you know when you've won? When there's no more crime? No more poverty? No one is ever afraid? It sounds more like an excuse for an ongoing goverment program to me.
