Guilt without punishment

If no purpose would be served in sending George Weller to prison, what purpose was served in trying him in the first place?

The defense said the tragedy was a terrible accident, caused when Weller lost control of his 1992 Buick after he mistook the accelerator for the brake pedal. But Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley consistently held that it was a crime that should be punished.

Johnson said Weller "has never once expressed in court any remorse for his actions. I will never understand his stubborn and bullheaded refusal to accept responsibility to put this matter to rest for everyone, including himself."

Was he guilty of anything besides not giving up his driver's license when he should have? Many of us will sooner or later have to make the same decision, and I wonder how we'll handle it? Was he tried because he killed so many people instead of one? Were his actions deliberate, or is that just what grieving people want to think?

Sometimes really awful things happen we could never have foreseen. Should everybody lose their license at 60 or 70 or 80 or 90? Should we have curbs 8 feet high to protect pedestrians? Should we have bigger brake pedals? Should we make all cars have foam front end bumpers? Should we not allow cars on streets during "pedestrians are walking" zones?

Some times something awful just happens....

I think the accident was very unfortunate and not intentional. But it is pretty sad that this man is not even showing any remorse! Has anyone done a psych test on him? Maybe he is not of sound mind or he is just one of those arrogant irresponsible people who doesn't want to take reponsiblity for any of their actions. If he is deemed of sound mind, some sort of punishment is warranted along with permanent removal of his drivers license. I love to drive and would hate to not be able to but I would hate it worse if I killed someone because i had lost my driving abilities.
