A healthy race

Democratic City Councilman Tom Hayhurst officially kicked off his challenge of 3rd District Rep. Mark Souder yesterday (he will have Primary opposition, but that's a mere technicality). Ominously, he said his top priority if elected would be "affordable health care." That can mean anything, of course, but here's a hint, from a newspaper story in Warsaw back in December: "He labeled the new Medicare program as a 'step in the right direction,' but said complications stemming from gaps in coverage are a concern." Souder voted for that monstrosity, and Hayhurst's main concern is that there are gaps; wasn't enough help, I guess. Hang on, fans of the free market; it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Not to say Hayhurst's approach is necessarily good, but the free market has, at best, a nodding acquaintance with America's health care industry. With government subsidies, lack of transparency in pricing, and the inability of consumers to simply "do without" health services, the free market doesn't do a good job of making America's healthcare industry efficient.
