Hoobucking Indiuckians

Hoosiers continue to get disrespected by those in surrounding states, and no one even seems to care:

Gov. Mitch Daniels is expected to formally announce today that Indiana and Illinois will study construction of the Illiana Expressway.

Daniels is expected to discuss a "memorandum of understanding" between the states that will have Indiana take the lead on an initial corridor planning study for the route.

Why is it "Illiana" instead of "Indiois"? -- that's what I'd like to know. And why is it "Michiana" instead of "Indigan," and "Kentuckiana" instead of "Indiucky"? For some reason, there isn't even a name for the Indiana-Ohio border region. Maybe it's because "Ohio" doesn't blend well with others. We could work with "Hoosiers" and "Buckeyes," though I have to admit that "Hoobuck" doesn't sound any better than "Buckier." Ya'll come back now, hear?

True, Indiana doesn't work very well as a prefix. People around here seem to use town names instead.

You know. Huntingtucky, Kendalltucky...

Both the front and back halves of the name Indiana, "Indy" and "-iana" sound pleasant to the ear, something which can't be said for many of our partners in these constructions. And marketing does matter. I wouldn't invest more than these few seconds worrying about the "issue."

Besides, if one is really concerned that somebody else is putting on airs, one can always take justifiable comfort in the old reliable wisdom: "The first shall be last, and the last first."
