Hope springs a leak

The Indianapolis Colts are giving us a false sense of hope by taking Peyton Manning off hte "physically unable to play" list:

Manning himself puts little importance on his current consecutive played games streak. He wants to play, and play at a high level.

It is clear that he is nowhere near that level less than two weeks before the start of the season. What has me worried is the secrecy, and mysterious manner surrounding the Colts.

Head coach Jim Caldwell stated, ""He's been throwing. It's going to be a bigger amount, and I don't think it needs a whole lot of explanation. The statement speaks for itself."

Basically, be happy he is throwing, and don't expect too much from him for the time being.

Rats. False hope, as you well know, is an important coping mechanism that helps get us through the down  times. Sometimes, when dreading the worst has us so drained we can't even fight off our lowered expectations, a little false hope can give us just the respite we need to bounce back and start accepting the inevitable. We each have only a certain amount of false hope in our reservoirs, and as much as I enjoy the Colts, I hate to waste any of it on anything as trivial as a spectator sport.

Leo:
What ever happend to the days when almost every single NFL team had a B/U QB that actually played (and many times saved the bacon)?
I can't believe Indy "dropped the ball" on this one (pun intended).

I remember a B/U named Earl Morrell...played w/ the BALTIMORE COLTS (Johnny Unitas), and not only was a a very good and seasoned QB, he was ALSO a damn fine place-kicker.
Ditto for another veteran named GEORGE BLANDA (Oakland Raiders).

Now THAT used to be called FOOTBALL.
And was from a time when all the eggs were never in ONE basket, if you get my drift.

Manning may claim his consecutive start streak is unimportant, but I'll predict that even if he's in no condition to play, he'll still take a couple of snaps before he's replaced with Painter or somebody, who will promptly tank the game.
I agree with Bob that the Colts are seriously hampered by the lack of a decent backup for Manning, but I he loses me when he notes that many quarterbacks, in an earlier era, also doubled as kickers. I started to suggest to Bob that it's a little too early in the day to be drinking, but then I noticed the clock. The sun's over the yardarm, my friend! Excuse me while I prepare myself a beverage and start wandering off topic myself. Cheers!
