Hurryin' nowhere fast

So far, I'm still keeping my vow to never watch college basketball again, but sometimes it's hard not to notice the news about IU, the team I once followed so faithfully. The news is pretty sad these days. Three years into the Tom Crean era, the Hoosiers have won a total of eight Big Ten games. Some sportswriters have had enough:

Beginning next year, it's time for IU basketball to become IU basketball again, with visual, indisputable progress and growth on the floor and on the scoreboard.

The third mulligan season is finished now ---- did I hear a "hallelujah!''? -- ending with the Hoosiers' 61-55 first-round Big Ten Tournament loss to Penn State at Conseco Fieldhouse. The final season numbers: a 12-20 record, just two victories more than last season; and 3-15 in the Big Ten, one victory fewer than last season.

But some are still struggling to see the silver lining:

And so here is something to take away, as Crean and his boys thumb a ride home from another lost season: Indiana's basketball program might still be prostrate, but the school itself never stood taller. Faced with a similar situation
