Interests and idealism

Former Indiana U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton, writing in the Indianapolis Star on foreign policy. I'm not sure I agree completely with his breakdown of "idealists" and "realists," but I think he's right in suggesting that:

The debate has increasingly become a pitched battle. But asking Americans to side with one philosophy or the other is a false choice, as most Americans find themselves on one side or the other depending upon the situation. American foreign policy has always worked best when our ideals and interests converge.
We cannot approach foreign policy challenges with a rigid ideological purity, nor pursue a realism stripped of values
