It's the real world, kids

Boy, who saw this one coming?

It seemed like a great idea in college to get that tattoo of a giant tiger on the forearm or that silver barbell through the lip. But now that they're entering the "real world," potential employers aren't quite as enthusiastic about body modification.

Randall Hansen, a career adviser and professor of marketing at Stetson University in Florida, says, "Although opinions of tattoos may have softened a bit in the last one or two years, the vast majority of employers prefer to err on the side of conservative."

I'll admit to a certain acting out when I was younger. But our rebellion -- the long hair, the funny clothes, the attitude -- were a little more easily, you know, erasable.

I've always looked at tattoos as the sole domain of men in the armed services. They earned the right to emblazon themselves with patriotic symbols or ladies' names (even if it was one helluva liberty on the town)...

But when everyday citizens plaster
themselves with all sorts of nonsense, all I can sadly see is just another sideshow freak...and let's fact it...we ALL wanted to see the "tattooed" man (or lady) when the carnival came to town.
Body piercings too fall into this category.

SO many "athletes" today have the "comicbook arm" syndrome...and to what end? The only GOOD side to it, is that in case of a crime, the perp or the victim can be more easily IDed.

And in spite of the best intentions of the employee, an employer will always consider tattoos as a "non-selling" point when the prosepective person seeks a job.

I can't really imagine undergoing surgery, or having my teeth cleaned by the "Illustrated Man"...can you?

Having a daughter with a lot of "ink" tends to make me realize how really small our attitudes are sometimes, ...

Yes, Larry, I've got a niece with a lot of ink, too, and it's ugly, ugly, ugly. You might consider it a small attitude but I consider it unsightly as all get-out, I just don't believe that human flesh was meant to be a canvas.
