Opening Arguments

Keep your distance

I've heard of laws being fine-tuned before, but this effort takes the cake:

The New Albany City Council will amend the adult cabaret ordinance that passed on first and second readings when it convenes Monday.

The new measure switches the closing time for live adult entertainment clubs from midnight to 3 a.m. and shifts the 6-foot no-touch rule to 5 feet.

This stumps me, I admit. The point of the no-touch rule is to prevent things like lap dances and, um, tipping the dancers with dollar bills (which I've seen described elsewhere as akin to going to a ball game and being forced to watch the game on the monitors). What difference does it make if it's 5 feet or 6 feet? The councilman who introduced the ordinance said -- no, not kidding here, that the council members were just "trying to cover all our bases."
