Mitch the Whig

Mitch Daniels talks to the New York Times about what a smaller government might look like:

He says he avoids using the phrase “waste, fraud and abuse” because “it's too glib — there's no wand you can wave.” He says military spending should be cut. He called the Republicans' recent attacks on Democratic efforts to slow Medicare's cost growth “not a proud moment for our party.” He had kind words for the Tea Party but pointed out that it did not have a solution.

I'm not a big fan of Daniels, but he's certainly right about the expression "waste, fraud and abuse." Every politician uses it, and it's meaningless.
The deficit is a huge problem right now and it seems to me that a fairly obvious step in the right direction would be to stop fighting pointless wars in the Middle East. We can't win in Afghanistan, and despite White House claims, we haven't really gotten out of Iraq. Surely there's some serious money to be saved there.
But Daniels just sounds nuts when he calls himself a "Whig." It sounds suspiciously like a man trying not to say exactly what he favors.
