Tailing the Komets

Never seen this before

In 21 years watching the Komets, I've never seen them be this snakebit getting goals. I've seen some lousy teams, but this shouldn't be one. I watched the game tonight and they looked tired, slow and like they were lacking confidence. They were out-shot 41-23 and in the third period when they trailed by one goal, they only got four shots on goal. Again, the goaltending and defense was fine, but they look lost in the opposing zone. They basically got beat tonight by Missouri's third line which scored both the goals, but no one on the top two lines is doing anything, either.

The Komets may have to make some roster moves just to shake things up. In other words, make a move just to make a move to see what happens. This is nuts.

Kometkrazy - I dunno if you've checked the standings but Dayton and Bloomington are very good this year. Yes, every game is "winnable". Right now Bloomy and Dayton are looking at games versus the K's as "winnable", too.

That's what I was going to say. Other than the fact that every game is technically winnable, Dayton especially has a really strong team this year. If you look at the way the K's have been playing to date and the way Dayton has been playing... Well no, the K's aren't likely to win very many against them.

Nuttintuit: Actually that's not true about the Komets having slow starts. What has happened at least the last couple of years is that they start fairly hot, then turn ice cold after the first few weeks. They get serious about things again at some point in the new year. It occurred to me that that is part of what has fans worried this year. This version of the Komets hasn't shown that they can play any better than they have been thus far. If they had put in a few good performances up front, sure, some people would still be negative, but most people would just sit back, grind their teeth, and expect the team to bounce back before the playoffs. It's like when the Pittsburgh Penguins suddenly start losing in the middle of the season. You know they can do much better because they were winning games just a few weeks earlier. But a team can't "bounce back" when it's been playing poorly from the very start. They can, however, improve.

And getting away from the basics is something that happens to teams of all levels. I think it's because the little, basic things that lead to wins aren't all that glamorous, and they are very hard work, to boot. Hockey players get lazy like everybody else. They'd rather score every goal with breathtaking shots from the slot than get pushed around by hot-headed goalies and towering defensemen in front of the net, looking for "garbage" goals. In past seasons, Sims would frequently lament how hard it is to find players who are willing to go to the net. To me, it always seemed to be more of a confidence issue than anything else. When players come together as a team and have faith in the team, everyone is more willing to do the "grunt" work for the good of that team. When everyone is struggling and it feels like it's every man for himself out there, who wants to get stuck cleaning the toilets, ya know?

Thanks Wendy. Not having lived here for long i guess maybe some fans have been spoiled. But doing the little things is part of any succesful job no matter what you do fir a living. Where i work if you are not doing the little things the supervisor says do it right or u r history. This team has a supervisor and his wirkers better listen or they will be drawing 99 weeks of unemployement. Lol Workers not wirkers..sry.

That's true, and that's exactly what some players are being threatened with (indirectly of course) as we speak. I suppose that hockey players are fortunate to have contracts and be skilled enough to represent a certain amount of investment by their teams. Otherwise they'd be in and out the door as quickly as the rest of us are in the real world.
