The nuclear option

U.S. Rep. Mike Pence apprently had a lot of applause lines during a recent town hall meeting in Muncie, including this one:

The time has come for America to build 100 new nuclear power plants in the next 20 years.

Nuclear power would seem to be an issue where both those concerned with meeting U.S. energy needs and those who worry about greenhouse emissions could meet. But Pence may be a little high in his need estimate. The electric power industry itself says it can achieve deep greenhouse reductions with (among other things) 45 new nuclear plants being built by 2030.
