Good-hearted Americans fed up with the direction of the country under the direction of the despicable Bush administration are fleeing to Canada in droves! What a wonderful testament to conscience and a terrible indictment of imperialist warmongers! But, wait. What were those numbers, exactly?

In 2006, 10,942 Americans went to Canada, compared with 9,262 in 2005 and 5,828 in 2000, according to a survey by the Association for Canadian Studies.

Wow. Stunning. Practically a liberal diaspora. But hold on a sec.:

Of course, those numbers are still outweighed by the number of Canadians going the other way. Yet, that imbalance is shrinking. Last year, 23,913 Canadians moved to the United States, a significant decrease from 29,930 in 2005.

Yeah, "significant." Nice try, ABC.

Most of the emigrants to and from Canada follow jobs. The Canadian economy remained pretty strong while the US limped along from recession to recession during the beginning of this decade. Also - Canada has less disparity of wealth, less abject poverty, some would say a great health care and educational systems, less violent crime, the cities do not have the desperate slums like most major US cities, the society is very civil and egalitarian. The Canadians also do a much better job than we do in minding their own business in world affairs - that is why you don't see angy mobs on the TV news burning the maple leaf in some radicalized country.

There is a lot we can and should learn from our friendly neighbors to the north.

Canada has some fairly high standards for citizenship applicants. Perhaps the "migration" from the U.S.A. to Canada consists of folks wishing to reside temporarily in a country with more sanity, equality, and community. As our quality of life erodes here, I am sorely tempted to explore the possibility of an extended stay with our civilized northern neighbors. 01.20.09 is a crucial date for many of us who feel that the civil liberties and economic opportunities that have characterized our country are disappearing under the rule of King George, jester Dick and brain Karl.

Yep, me too, got a brother with dual citizenship and a Canadian wife too. Aside from the natural beauty of Canada, not much else impresses me.
