Playing by the rules

What rules should there be in war? If the other side doesn't play by them and we do, does that mean we preserve what we stand for rather than become like our enemies? Or are we giving them an upper hand that will make it harder for us to win? And how can we even debate the issue when there is such a difference in what people see when they look at the same thing?

There is this, from Evan Bayh, who speaks not only for Democrats but whose views are shared by an increasing number of Republicans in Congress:

The latest debate on terror centers on President Bush's request for a measure granting the administration sweeping authority over terror suspects, including allowing secret evidence and coerced testimony.

Senate Republicans have rejected that measure, and Bayh said he supports a milder package proposed by some Republicans.

"I think we ought to build on the consensus approach that we've got that is tough, but also smart," said Bayh. "We've got to get the information from the detainees but we've got to do it in a way that doesn't jeopardize our troops, doesn't put them at greater risk of being tortured if they are in captivity."

The Senate measure is backed by key leaders such as Arizona Sen. John McCain, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Then there is this, which suggests that we are being too lenient with detainess rather than too tough:

The politically correct regulations are unbelievable. Detainees are entitled to a full eight hours sleep and can't be woken up for interrogations. They enjoy three meals and five prayers per day, without interruption. They are entitled to a minimum of two hours of outdoor recreation per day.

Interrogations are limited to four hours, usually running two - and (of course) are interrupted for prayers. One interrogator actually bakes cookies for detainees, while another serves them Subway or McDonald's sandwiches. Both are available on base. (Filet o' Fish is an al Qaeda favorite.)

Interrogations are not video or audio taped, perhaps to preserve detainee privacy.

Call it excessive compassion by a nation devoted to therapy, but it's dangerous.

I think the concerns about being rough with prisoners putting our own troops at greater risk of torture are at least a little naive. The idea that if we're nice they will be nice is a dangerous delusion that completely ignores who and what we're fighting, and it has been disproven over and over for at least the last five years. It is proper to ask how we are conducting a war and set standards for that conduct. But our safety and security can't be taken out of the mix. If we underestimate the danger to ourselves and exaggerate the mistreatment of others, we will let "the rules" destroy us.

Sometimes I think that's why we've not won a conflict over the past 35 years, ... we're playing by the rules and no one else is.

The old "if you ignore it, it will go away" rhetoric doesn't apply to warfare (unfortunately).

Maybe if some of Sun Tsu's dictates were employed instead of all the "Please, oh, pretty please tell us who all those other AL-Qaeda operatives are, Achmed?" devices that are just not cutting it (because they KNOW we "play by the rules")...then we might see some REAL progress in the Middle East.

Perhaps a change in "tactics" IS due?

Anyone recall the firebombing of Dresden, Germany? How about Berlin? And then there is ALWAYS Hiroshima...and Nagasaki as well as the wholesale carpet bombing during Operation Linebacker in 'Nam. And all of these were basically NON-negotiable tactics WE used.

It's ALWAYS preferred to sow the seeds of liberty and freedom throughout the world (using diplomacy WHEN feasible), BUT...sometimes you just can't do ANY "farming" without getting one's hands a tad dirty in the process. Ask the Amish...!

These terrorists will slit a throat simply because of WHO we are and what we represent...and we (as Americans) want to try and TALK with them, and treat THEM fairly in the "hope" they will respond in kind?

Yeah..explain THAT to all the doctors at Gitmo who NOW wear body armor, because one of them was STABBED when he was being treating a detainee "fairly".
WE give these detainees 3 meals, 8 hrs of sleep, 2 hrs exercise, religious artifacts they "need", and all we get back is human urine and feces tossed at our troops there...sure glad to know WE'RE being FAIR about this.

Example: How many times do you have to get BIT by an animal before you realize that the animal can't be trained, talked to, or reasoned with?

Seems we want to take OUR (current) penal system and apply it on a GLOBAL scale to include warfare wherever it finds us. I suppose conjugal visits, smuggled drugs and cable TV are next...?

Sorry...I'm just having a little bit of trouble buying into that.
But hey...it's just *my* take on this.

There is only ONE reason this is an issue and it has nothing to do with human rights or the way we treat prisoners or the way the world perceives the U.S.

It has to do with politics. The political left, in it's vehement hatred for GWB would rather feed the muslim world this propaganda (making things much worse worldwide) than tell the truth.

They haved framed a world wide controversy and debate on an issue that is basically non-existent. We don't torture prisoners, never have and never will, but the rest of the world sure as hell THINKS we torture prisoners. Throwing gas on a worldwide fire might get a few more democrats elected and a few republicans re-elected but I'm appalled they would endanger innocent people just to win an election. Claiming their concern is for American soldiers who may be captured is a hollow argument as well. Our soldiers already know if they are captured they are going to be killed. These guys don't play by the rules, and to think we will EVER face an enemy again that would abide by the conventions is foolhardy. Times have changed...

Something else I find particularly ironic is the large number of Muslims proving the very point the Pope so benignly expressed.

It's the Democrats stirring up the Republicans to counter the White House? Ridiculous. The Republicans are in the majority - their OWN Senators (those who have actually served BTW) are against this president's plan. I guess I missed the day that McCain and Graham switched over to the other side of the isle.

"We don't torture prisoners, never have and never will..."

Maybe if you say this enough you'll actually start to believe it. While you're at it, click your heals together:

"There's no torture at home.
There's no torture at home."

Meanwhile, the rest of us will continue to live in the real world...

Once again Jeff you missed the point. Democrats and liberals are by far the leaders in this fiasco to grant prisoners everything but a trip to disneyland. McCain and Graham are just covering their collective political asses and will pay a price for pandering.

Do we knock 'em around and put panties on their head? Make 'em listen to The Red Hot Chili Peppers? Yes we do. We don't freakin' torture them.

It's telling that you think Americans are on the same moral level as the guys who slice the throats of children....

That's just sad that you and so many others believe that the most philanthropic and generous nation in the history of the world is really the evil empire. How can you honestly believe that we are not the most civilized nation in history? We help ANYONE who asks for it. We refuse aid to NO ONE. We help worldwide during ANY disaster..Our domestic laws give defendants more rights than any other country does etc etc etc...

And we're the bad guys....

If anyone wants to discuss "torture"....

...How about ALL those DAMN BOOMCARS that thump their way at OVER 120 Db into our hearts, heads, homes, and every other thing imaginable at ALL hours of the day AND night with lyrics degrading everything and everyone while still managing to use the *F* word every OTHER word...all for the "sake" of diversity and culture...???

Now THAT my friends...is TORTURE!

-last time I checked, MY name wasn't NORIEGA-

Kinda hard to see the fight against GLOBAL terrorism when you allow inner city terrorism to go unabated OR even unrecognized for the problem it IS...

And THAT is the real world.
