Spring forward, fall behind

Welcome back to school, kids. Football games, band practice, boring food in the cafeteria and, oh, yes, your ISTEP tests. Sharpen your pencils and get lots of sleep, but don't worry. It's just your entire future that's at stake. Even if we're going to turn students into test-taking zombies who think their success in life will depend on how they do on multiple-choice tests, couldn't we at least give the tests in the spring, when students will have been able to study what's on the tests (and gotten used to getting plenty of sleep, by the way) instead of in the fall when they've had all summer to forget everything? Oh, and did we mention to get lots of sleep?
