State of youth

News outlets searching through 2010 Census data have made the biggest deal about the increase in the number of same-sex households. ("States gay household tally up 61%," blares The Journal-Gazette, but the current actual number of 16,428 isn't all that impressive.) There are also other intersting things in the numbers that shouldn't be overlooked:

The latest information places Indiana's median age at 37.

An ethnic analysis shows 82 percent of the state is white with a median age of 39.

The state's black population has a median age is just 30.7 while the Asian population has a median age right at 30.

The state's rapidly growing Hispanic population has a median age of 24.

Indiana was also one of just three states to see an increase in the number of residents under the age of 18. Demographer Matt Kinghorn attributes the increase to the increasing younger demographics in the minority populations.

Though the state is 82 percent white, enough of the minority population is trending younger that we're one of only three states to have an increase of the under18 group. That's not only a significant change but an indicator of even more change to come. Unless, of course, the brain drain wipes out any advantage we have.

And, drat, no matter how I look at the numbers, I'm not an average Hoosier. Not even a median one. Another lifelong dream shot to hell.

I can't imagine you striving to be mere average, Leo.
