Are we stable right now financially?

Sounds like ticket prices are going up.....

I guess 7500 fans a game is not enough in the CHL.

We would have to draw 20,000 to be in the ECHL.

Look, I get the management can charge whatever they want for tickets, but you cant compare Tulsa and Mississippi seat prices against the Komets and say that is an even comparison. The Komets average attendance is almost double that of those and most of the rest of the CHL. To meet expenses of course those tickets will have to be priced higher than the K's. Heck, the 3500 season tickets Franke mentions is the average most CHL team have per game, and other CHL teams travel much more than the Komets so their costs should be higher. All I'm saying is if you are going to give justification at all for price increases don't try to sell it off as increased travel and expect not to have your motives questioned, especially in this economy. And if you do want to do a comparison why should be use teams not in our "geographical footprint"? In looking over the ticket costs for ECHL teams in our area their ticket costs put the K's in about the middle of the road, but they travel much more than the K's do to more teams outside of their area. How can Kalamazoo offer much lower ticket costs, have increased travel and yet still survive all the expenses? I know it is a mute point...still just bothers me that we play the same four teams as we did in the IHL2 over 70% of the time but in the same breath say travel costs is what is driving costs.

For me, I think they have finally reached a tipping point. I think this is going to be true with a lot of fans. I had season tickets for the last 5 years, but did not renew them this year because I didnt use enough of them last year. I figured I would just pay as I go this year. The increase will definitely make me go to less games this year. I love hockey, I love the Komet brand, but its just getting too expensive. I understand the business side of it, but like any other business, the other option is to reduce the expenses. We play Colorado, but not Toledo? I realize that there are a lot of other factors to make that happen, but as a fan it does not make sense to me.

Used to play Colorado, but now they are in the ECHL, too....Speaking of which - anyone looked at the schedule to see when Colorado plays @ Toledo?

Wow...Bloomington has had a rough go of it. I doubt they crack 2000 people in the seats very often this year. That new franchise is really behind the 8ball and are in trouble. The little fans they have left have to be frustgrated as heck.

This is going to be an interesting year.

QC and Bloomington worry me.

Dayton....can they put butts in the seats?

Been Komet fans for years, went to every home game, some away games. Looks like nose bleed seats for us too!! Family of three with one income coming in right now, pepsi zone behind #33 will just be to much!! Most single ticket buyers are just as dedicated as season ticket holders; some more dedicated! Guess that does not mean much. Sorry #33 you will not be able to hear us cheer ya on anymore, but we will still be there cheering!!! LETS GO KOMETS!!!!!!!!

unfortunately Colorado is in the ECHL west division and the furthest east they come at all is to Idaho...

K-Zoo and Chicago play like 15 or 16 times.....Martinson the IceHog is assembling an Icehog kind of team in Chicago. Those games would be worth going to see.

I'm a moron because I meant to say Colorado is the team furthest east with Utah and Idaho as their closest rival teams...sorry

Gas goes up, food goes up, cost of living goes up, and entertainment goes up. Only thing not going up is our paychecks. So where do these business owners think we are supposed to get the extra money to pay for these things? I understand the economy is junk right now and so businesses have to make the adjustments to keep operating. Of course GAS is the sole reason for the increase in product prices and the reason for decrease in economic spending. So it frustrates me why businesses can't come together and figure out a way to make things more affordable. Because they certainly aren't going to raise our pay at this time and state of economy.

I personally think the komets should do away with the extra activities between periods. Once in a while maybe have something, but every period, every game is unneccessary. Would think that would save some money.

Don't know if the Jeep girls are paid anything. If so, i'm sorry, but they're aren't needed or as many anyway.

I'm not a business owner and may be totally off my rocker. I'm just one of several frustrated people in this horrible economy.

Been a Komet fan for more years than I can remember and it appears that my days of attending games are numbered. My family has to budget for entertainment and with the increase in tickets it will exceed the budget. It's okay for me to not attend a game as there is still ther radio. But eventually if others follow suit, it will kill minor league hockey.

Just some general comments on all of the above:

Since I have no access to the Komets books or know what it takes to keep the Komets profitable, I have no credible opinion on the price increases. Everything seems to be going up and as long as it isn't price gouging, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

As more than a few have suggested, if travel costs are causing them financial pain, then maybe it is time to look at a league where the travel costs are more reasonable (ECHL). Maybe that is exactly what they are doing. The Komets are committed to the CHL for one more year. They are not the only team that will have its agreement expire with the CHL at the end of this season. Without further information it may be difficult to judge what the CHL will look like next year or even if there will be a CHL that we would recognize. That being the case, maybe the Komets are building a war chest to use as an entry for the ECHL. I'm not saying that's the situation but merely speculating. It would give the Komets extra money to pay the entrance fee and also give many fans their wish of playing in a more geographic league with and against many old and familiar foes.

As a taxpayer and resident of Allen County, I would suggest that the parking fee is an area where we should inquire. The Coliseum is a stand alone revenue raising entity for the most part. However they can and do take advantage of contracts negotiated through the Allen County Department of Public Purchase. They kind of have the best of both worlds, so to speak, when costs are involved. I would submit that as taxpayers we are paying twice when parking and parking maintenance exists. The County should maintain the parking lot through tax money. Of course, the argument for that would be that taxes may have to be increased if the County took on that extra responsibility and it is easier to charge the "user fee". Before everyone dismisses this, please ask some "oldtimers" about the parking lot. Years ago, when the lot was built, there was a $0.25 fee to help defray the cost. That fee was to be discontinued when the lot was paid for. History tells us that it never happened and paying for parking has been with us ever since. Now it seems absurd to think of parking without a fee. It is done at most sports venues and has become part of the "culture" and just accepted as being the norm.

The Memorial Coliseum is under going some repairs to its roof. As silly as this sounds, why don't they charge us a "ceiling fee" to fix and maintain it. I would submit to you that the roof is just as important to me as the parking lot. Yet, it isn't considered, is it?

My opinion is that Brandon Warner has worn out his welcome. I'm sure that the Komets who are skating are glad to have as many as they can get to replicate a scrimmage or just plain practice. I see nothing more than that or maybe he is trying to get an offer from some other team and is staying in shape.

We still need more scoring.

Good grief!! Can I get everyone some cheese to go with that whine? Please stop complaining about the Greedy Frankes, the Corporate Fat Cats. They set the ticket prices based on 1) what they think they need to operate the club with a decent profit balanced against 2) what will still get them enough attendance. Their so-called greed counts for nothing because They Can't Make You Go To The Games. If it's too expensive, don't go! If the quality of play isn't up to your standards, stay home! The sheriff is not going to come to your house to drag you off to the Coliseum and shake the $$ out of your pocket so the Frankes can use it to light up their Corporate Fat Cat cigars. Again, this is an economic transaction between you and the Komets in which you can choose to participate or not. If you just have to have your hockey fix, pony up for NHL Center Ice and you'll get all you want - and the beer will be cheaper, too (and no parking fee!)

It is absolutely amazing to me that so many of you are complaining about a $2 increase in the single ticket price. Look around. I personally cannot think of anything that hasn't increased in cost over the last several years. Is $2 really such a hardship? Give up buying one pop per week and you got your $2 back. You can't go to a movie and buy a popcorn and pop for what a Komet ticket costs. I am thinking it is just a case of so little time, something new to gripe about.

$3 per ticket in little over a year....

Its amazing that some can be so callous towards those whos budgets are stretched so thin that 2-3 dollars more can put them over the edge and can be the deciding factor to if they can or cannot enjoy their entertainment of choice...

Take things that people love away from them or restrict access to the same and people react strongly and ususally negatively....

Why do we accept the parking charge? (Part of the 'culture' makes it alright?)

The Komet brand is worth what the Frankes are asking. However, if I buy a Cadillac I expect performance, not some low-level hockey talent, er, I mean low-level quality. So I guess what I'm saying is that the talent level should equal/live up to the brand name. ECHL would be a step in the right direction. 'But there's a million dollar entry charge!' So what!! The Komets can't afford it?? Give that argument a rest already. It holds absolutely no water IMO. Because if this organization isn't willing to give a little to gain a lot, then even more speculation will rise (such as greed mentioned previously).

So, if I really want to go to a hockey game this year it looks like I'll have to pony up, dig through my couch cushins, save up, do whatever. Frequency on the other hand might be an issue...

You go Ron. I hope all the folks that are in bad shape economically and can't afford to go to games anymore, remember what you have to do next November to change things and get this economy going again so you can afford to go to games again.

Ron

JR1: OK - call me callous. Peoples' circumstances are what they are, and as the environment around them changes, they have to adapt. Can't afford Komets games? Read a book. Play with your kids. Build model airplanes. You have lots of choices. You can complain about the Frankes all you want, but their circumstances are changing as well and they have to adapt, too. Heck, the increase in ticket prices may turn out to be a disaster and attendance may drop by 2000 per game. Guess what - then the Frankes would have to adapt again.

And No-Touch Icing - why do we accept the parking charge? Not clear how you have a choice given that they won't let you in w/o paying. If that $4 is a burden, maybe car pool to the game and defray the costs. The parking charge is a revenue stream for the Coliseum just like hot dogs and beer. Live with it.

I get it now....I was trying to figure out how that related to Ron's speech.

You are saying voting in November for president will change the economy...hmmmm.

Sorry, I don't think that would change a thing. If we fall further into the Tea Bagger Hole....we might never get out. I am not saying that either party is doing a good job....I just think the extremeness of those hair-brains will make it worse. We really have no good choices in politics anymore....so I guess we should just keep this blog to Komet Hockey???

I think so.

Fact is. the economy is tough on alot of people working and without jobs alike. I am feeling as much as anybody.

I will guess:

Build model airplanes? This isnt the 50's anymore....

Komets games are supposed to be family entertainment...at least thats what they say in their advertising and now they are making it harder for families to attend by raising prices...

The $2-3 increases arent hurting the bachelors of the city, its hurting the families...

Whats the difference from last offseason to now? A $2 increase seemed just too much last year (according to the Frankes) so they increased $1; but now add another $2 making that a $3 increase in little over 1 year... $2 dollars is just too much so we'll increase it by $3 over a 12 month period...

If attendance trends downward again what will have made more sense, losing 700-800 fans or increasing tickets by $3 over a two season span?

One thing to keep in mind is 2 years ago the Komets had 38 home games. Last year 36 and this year 33. Now disregarding last year since 3 of those games were "home" games for Evansville thats 5 games of lost revenue from 2 years ago. And yes granted the salary cap is about $2500 less in the CHL as opposed to the IHL2 but there are also 2 less players per roster. Now lets say for those 5 games there were an average of 7000 fans at $12 a head. Thats $420,000 in just ticket sales alone. Now take 33 home games times the 7000 average and multiply that by the $2 increase. It comes out to $462,000. Thats only $42,000 more in ticket revenue. And that is a wash with 2 trips to RC and 1 trip each to Wichita, Missouri, Arizona and Tulsa. Add hotel stays and food expenses for the trips to RC and Arizona and it looks to me the Frankes had no choice. And I am sure the promotions planned for this 60 year anniversary aren't free to provide to the fans. Sure they will make their money, but would you rather have an unstable franchise like half or more of the teams in any minor league sport. I don't. People piss and moan about $2 ticket prices but accept $3 gallon of gas when there enough oil in the US alone to last 2000 years and we should be paying less than $1. If you want movies, how about $10.50 for a matinee 3d movie Transformers and $10 for a bag of popcorn and a soda. Each. If I decide to sit in the lower arena for a couple of games and pay an extra $4 for me and my son I will with no problem. We can compensate with drinking small soda and not large. If not I will gladly sit in the upper deck for the $6-10 and watch the team I have rooted for for over 30 years and not worry over $2. Several other teams in the CHL charge up to $45 a seat. Komets highest price is half that. Somehow I just see the big issue because I'm sure the expenses for the Komets go up the same as they do for you and me.
