Well-schooled

Congratulations to West Lafayette. The women might not all be strong and all the men good-looking, but many of the children are probably above average:

Forbes magazine has ranked West Lafayette as the sixth most educated small city in America.

The ranking, released this week, was based on education levels of residents older than 25 in communities with populations between 20,000 and 65,000. West Lafayette was the top city on the list that was not on the East Coast or in California. It was one of two Midwestern cities on the list, along with Wilmette, Ill. The Chicago suburb was 13th.

A quibble, though: "Educated" isn't the same as "smart." Some of the saddest people in the world, in fact, are those who are educated beyond their potential. More and more of that around

My family and I live across the river in regular Lafayette. That probably helped the average.
