The Komets are talking about the possibility of retiring another number next year. Whom do you think should be considered? It's way too early for G

I'll be happy if the pre-game program doesn't take twice as long as the game as it has in other years...
I wouldnt object to Boucher being in the HOF eventually, but not a number retired. Dupuis and possibly Chaulk are about it in my Komet watching life time (15-20 years)
No rush to retire Guy (or his jersey) before he's ready. Not saying anyone is or isn't. Just my own opinion.
And I disagree with making an exception. But can the Komets voluntarily just not assign that jersey number, knowing that they may retire it for Guy in the future? Would that not be a valid option? They don't have to have another #2, do they, if Guy does decide to retire in the next 5 years?
And names I'd throw out there that have not already been mentioned might include Barry Scully, #9....he's all over the Komets record books for most points, although I'd have to re-check how long he was here. Well, it was 5 seasons, although there was a few years break in between . 4 continuous seasons though. I'm not sure about him as an off-ice guy....we have his helmet, and I don't know where he lives now. LOL...funny....he was a 6th round Rangers draft pick, and my son plays for the pee-wee Rangers at Canlan. Odd coincidence.
And I mainly don't want to see the long pre-game program either, if only to see the opponents think it's over, THEN have us do more stuff on-ice just when everyone thought it was over. Lots of people, Komet fans included, seemed to think that was a little classless. The opponents are athletes who were warmed up and ready to start the game.
With it being the Komets 60th season it would seem only right for Guy to still be on the ice...I might be alone in that line of thinking but wouldn't be the 1st time
Nope, GM....you are not alone in that.
I'm sorry GM; but this is the kind of thinking that got us into this mess our first season in the CHL....
Guy by far wasn't the worst out there. He is just one of the easier ones to pick on.
Guy will make his own decision, and he doesn't need anyone else to help him! ;)
Sorry if I offend anyone here, just my opinions on some names tossed out already.
Dupuis and Chaulk - SLAM DUNKS for number retirements, BUT wait a few years after their careers end. You don't win all the championships they have (so far) wearing the fireball and playing as well as they have for so many years without getting this kind of recognition.
Bawa - NO WAY to either HOF or retired number.
Boyce - Hall of Fame.
Baldwin - Hall of Fame.
Salvucci - no to HOF or retired number - only played 4 seasons in Fort Wayne. Other players have better numbers.
Lucyk - Hall of Fame. No to retiring a number, unless done with another player (see below).
Richison - no to HOF or retired number - played parts of 7 seasons with Fort Wayne, but also played for LOTS of other teams during and after his years in FW.
Scully has the numbers - 288 regular season goals, 201 assists as a Komet, but he was let go early in the 1983-84 season and played two more years with 4 other teams. HOF definitely, retired number, not so sure.
In my mind, for a player to have his number retired, he should have played MOST if not all of his career in Fort Wayne and put up good numbers, have been part of championship teams or, ideally, both.
Let's go back a few years ...
What about adding Ron Leef to the No. 12 retirees? He scored 212 regular season goals and had 291 assists in 5 seasons. I would be OK with also retiring No. 12 for Lucyk ONLY IF it is also retired for Leef.
What about No. 19 for Terry McDougall? I know he's already in the HOF and didn't finish his career as a Komet, but he put up 249 regular season goals and 395 assists in 6-1/2 seasons wearing the fireball.
My choice would be No. 15 for Merv Dubchak. He's already in the Hall of Fame; scored 321 regular season goals and 218 assists as a Komet and STILL holds the team record with 72 goals in a season (in a 70-game schedule to boot).
breslyn: Guy made #1 d-man money this past season and didnt play to that #1 d-man level... He really looked slow out there playing under NHL rules. If the K's were still in the clutch and grab IHL2 then he could/would play another 2-3 years because the rules were so much different. I thought he did a very good job adjusting to the new rules after the first month or so; but that changed his game to the point where he wasnt as productive as in the past.
And please people, lets think with our heads on some of these vets and not our hearts... Dupuis has been great for a long time...Drouin has been good for several years; but they just dont fit into developmental leagues...
Put Guy in the HOF and retire his number in 5 years and give PC a nice fruit basket and say thanks, we'll see ya at the beginning of each new season when you walk out there with all the other Komets old timers........
...and Guy is among many other below expectation performing players who receive a lot of $$$$ (minor league hockey $$$ anyway).
He is 40. That's why he is picked on more than the others.
Jeff...thanks for the Ron Leef mention....can't believe I did not think of that one, too. He also has the community ties as well, living here and he also teaches the next generation of hockey greats. And I don't just mean any little kid who wants to play....his U-16 Komet travel team had a few kids who were being looked at by junior league scouts this season, and some of those kids were awfully good. They also finished the year with a perfect regular season, if memory serves. He's a great coach.
A fruit basket does make a wonderful gift!
komets123....broadcasters don't have a jersey number. They don't have to wait any certain set number of years to have a "sweater" retired. A banner being raised is just a symbolic honor for them for years of service to their team. It happens at all levels of hockey.
one choice for a retired number, #4 calvin purinton!
Guy is far from the most 'picked' on player as you have pointed out... Drouin, Curadeau, Warner, Patrosso, to name a few have all been blasted more frequently for thier play this season and ALL are younger....
Its not an age thing, its a level of play thing.... Age does factor in; but its not the only factor...
Just a thought (no inside knowledge here).... We wouldn't have to retire another number if we decided to honor Jim Burton and put his name on the #6 as well. My 2 cents.
Guy picked on?? Ahem some of you people about hung the hometown kid off the Coloseum BLVD underpass.
Guy has no more business at this level than Tom Nemeth or any other slow spacetaker would.
All due respect to him for an outstanding career but if he wants to keep playing then please head to the SPHL or some other league that is not geared towards player development.
Seems like there is indecision about whether or not to grant a 'waiver' on the wait to retire #2. I just say poll the current surviving 'retirees' and see what their opinion is about hoisting a banner early.
Oh boy... Lets open the Warner door again...
JM everyone knows it was his poor assistance that caused the Komets to lose the series to RC.
Nobody has made a good point about any player number to be retired. So there!! I would say Guy & Chaulk in 5 to 7 years if we still have hockey.
No worries, Warner will get his complimentary spot on the team next season.
BLB and Komets123
Actually, in Chase's case, they did retire #40 for him ... way back in the 1992-93 season.
Whenever Chaser retires, I guess they could retire a new number for him and save #40 to retire for Dusty Imoo. LOL
Dusty was no Jimi St John! That guy got rich opening up sub shops when he retired.
Warner will be in Dayton next year and score 12 to 15 goals
Blb i agree with Leef and Dubber. Plus Puriton. Gosh there are so many to look at. But cannot retire all of them.
Wow, next time I'll get my money's worth if I'm going to have a post removed........
Funny that we were always allowed to clown on guys like Worlton, but others are labeled "untouchable". I'm guessing that since the Iowa Chops were the main bidder for the services, that maybe its deemed irrelevant?
Let's see...Bob Chase is up there...what about long-time sportswriter and author of Komets' books? What's his name?
The team can't retire a writer. It would open up the conflict of interest pandoras box all over the place.
