Opening Arguments

Vroom, vroom

The General Assembly is getting out of an area it shouldn't have been involved with in the first place:

Indiana’s motorcycle dealers will be allowed to buy and sell their bikes on Sundays under a change in state law that legislators have approved.  The Indiana House voted 68-31 on Monday in favor of the bill removing the current ban on Sunday motorcycle sales.

The ban on Sunday car sales remains, as do the convoluted blue law restrictions of Sunday alcohol sales. Lawmakers even tell car dealers where they can and can't build new dealerships. One of the issues in the continuing statewide smoking ban debate is the state's increasing inclination to get into the affairs of private businesses despite its utter ignorance of business needs and its utter lack of moral authority. That issue is muted in that debate, however, because of the argument over the effects of secondhand smoke. There's no such distraction here, however, so the issue is much more clearly in focus: The state must meddled; can't help it, wouldn't try to stop.

Leo:

Personally, I grew up with the blue laws back in Philly, and it worked fine for us.

Then again, we saw little real NEED to go out and buy a car, motorcycle or booze (that was usually done throughout the PREVIOUS SIX DAYS)

Having the restaurants being open was fine (especially after church), but I never had this sudden URGE to go grocery shopping, or dash out and buy some CLOTHES on a Sunday.

Wasn't THAT "supposed" to be some kind of "day of rest" thing, anyway?

We could just as well say there's no "NEED" for the entire population of Indiana to be restricted by the bronze-age superstitions of any given subset of that populace.
