Komets land Effinger
Preseason roster grows to nine

Fort Wayne, IN --  The Komets announced Thursday that goaltender Charlie Effinger has been added to the 2012-13 preseason roster.

Effinger (EFF-in-juhr), the Missouri netminder that stopped the Komets in his only regular season meeting last year and forced the Komets to seven games in the CHL semifinals, has agreed to terms with Fort Wayne for 2012-13.

Effinger, 26, appeared in 51 games with Missouri last season posting 32 wins; tying Fort Wayne's Nick Boucher for most goaltender wins.  Effinger registered a career-best 32-15-4 record to become the winningest goaltender in Missouri's history.  The Belleville, Illinois native finished the regular season campaign with a top-10 2.70 goals-against average and ranked second with a .923 save percentage.  Effinger finished the playoffs with a 7-4 record, 2.50 goals-against average and led CHL goaltenders with a .932 save percentage appearing in all 11 post-season games with the Mavericks.

Effinger backstopped the Mavericks to a 3-games-to-2 semifinals lead over Fort Wayne before the Komets rallied to win the series 4-3 and advance to the CHL finals.

Prior to making his pro debut in 2008 in ECHL stints with Gwinnett and Trenton, Effinger completed four years with Miami University of Ohio in the CCHA where the netminder was named 2005-06 CCHA Goaltender of the Year.  2012-13 will be Effinger's fifth year as a pro.

With nine weeks remaining until training camp and the addition of Effinger, the Komet preseason roster grows to nine players.  The roster includes five forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender.  Previously added were Colin Chaulk (C), Brett Smith (C), Eric Giosa (C), Kaleigh Schrock (RW), Brandon Marino (RW), Tyler Butler (D), Kyle Atkins (D) and Daniel Maggio (D).

Well it looks like a good start to a team. All of the players are very capable of playing in the ECHL at a competitive level. Some of them have the potential to play at a high level I am sure. I have seen a lot of ECHL games and CHL games. What I have noticed is that the first line CHL is slightly better than the ECHL (remember the top ECHL players tend to get moved up to the AHL and when there NHL deal is over they often to the CHL or IHL because of more vets rule) , second line is about the same, third line CHL is better than ECHL (again the CHL players are not "developmental" players but proven players without NHL deals). Case and point the Ks third line(if its true) with Schrock, Rizk, Thorne will be one of the best if not the best third line in the ECHL. Goaltending is another issue all together, ECHL goaltenders are better for the most part than CHL. NHL teams will sent the backup AHL guy to the ECHL so he can get way more game time. Defense in the ECHL are bigger and faster for some and bigger and slower for others. I watched a first round draft pick last year three times that was 6-5 and he was a terrible skater and gave the puck away all the time. We will have to see what other young players they get.  In the ECHL the best teams to the bad teams is not that big of a jump.  What does change is who gets called up or sent down can change a team immensely. So in the end I think the Ks will be above .500 and have a good shot at the playoffs but I don't see a Cup year. I would like to see another Cup year for sure. Again these are just my views so try not to lob personal attracts.

Hi Janice.  I'm not so sure Blake is back from vacation.  I think someone else  at the News-Sentinel is monitoring news that may be of interest to the blog site and creating the thread.  I suspect that is why you perceive a difference in the blog style.

I'm pretty sure that Blake will make sure he announces his return.

Funny thing, there sure seems to be a lot of stuff happening while he is gone.  Come to think of it, didn't Blake just take a vacation about five years ago?  LOL

This just into the OHIC.  This makes the Goalie situation interesting.  The Chief told me that Bouch is signing with Walt Disney when his hip is better.  Big Bird truly has no friends around here anymore, OK MAN?
