Opening Arguments

It ain't easy

Yeah, well, just deal with it, you big baby:

Speaking to State Department personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil, on Tuesday, Secretary of State John Kerry said that "this little thing called the Internet ... makes it much harder to govern."

Democracy isn't supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be operated with the informed consent of the governed. That makes it harder for our guys to govern than it is for a tyrant who can just order things done and shoot people who don't do them. Way it works, ya know?

And let's not pretend this "little thing called the Internet" is causing some big new stick in the eye for our leaders. Our lack of information has always been their best method of control and getting information our best way of keeping power and its abuses at bay. Early in my reporting career, city hall bureaucrats would tell me all the time that I was making things harder for them. Well, it was my job to do that.
