Quarter for your thoughts

Kinda scary:

Illustrating once again how many Americans’ knowledge of the Bill of Rights is virtually non-existent, Californians signed a petition to repeal the Third Amendment and allow U.S. troops to commandeer their homes.

The unbelievable footage was captured recently in California by activist prankster Mark Dice, a regular Infowars contributor.

Dice managed to persuade several passers by to sign their names up for scrapping the Third Amendment, which states “No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.”

“We want to repeal the Third Amendment to keep the housing prices down for the military folks… just support Obama and support the troops.” Dice told one passer by who then eagerly signed his name.

“These military folks are clean and orderly people, so they won’t dirty up your house too much whilst we eliminate the Third Amendment and you can quarter them in your house if they just want to come in.” Dice told another man who was signing up without question.

A little bit of Jay Leno's Jaywalking here, huh? Yeah, let's just let those clean and orderly soldiers commandeer our homes to keep housing costs down for the military folks and show how we support Obama and the troops.

To be fair, using the Third Amendment to demonstrate constitutional ignorance is kind of rigging the game. I mean, how often does the Third come up in jurisprudence or day-to-day conversation? It's the forgotten amendment, stuck in there in reaction to the Brits' Quartering Act that stopped being a problem once we won the Revolution. If people showed ignorance of the First or Second Amendment, that would truly be scary.

And considering that our Washington masters, from President Obama on down, show absolutely no respect for the Constitution, I supposed it shouldn't be surprisng that Americans increasingly have trouble understanding it.

Wonder how that quartering in time of war "in a manner prescribed by law" would work, by the way. Does war overseas count, or does somebody have to attack us on our own soil? Did 9/11 count? Do soldiers have to help with the dishes?
