I'm for openness in government, but I'm not too sure the police were smart to publicize this:
GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Unless they're pursuing dangerous felons, police here no longer will give chase on poorly maintained county roads.
The roads, generally those south and west of the city, are too dangerous to speed on because they are narrow, lack berms and have too many bumps and dips, Chief Joe Pitcher said.
Police in every jurisdiction should certainly review their pursuit policies. Too often, police keep pursuing when the public good in catching somebody is outweighed by the danger to public safety from the chase itself. But should they be telling the bad guys which routes to take if they want to make a getaway?
Of course, if the purpose was to put pressure on the county to fix those roads . . .
