When I read about Mike Pence, truly a conservative in most respects, dissing the U.S. Senate's amnesty plan disguised as a guest-worker program, then offering his alternative, which calls for a stronger border-security program, followed by another version of an amnesty program that he says is not an amnesty program, I thought I had seen the final proof that Washington. D.C., is, indeed, in a parallel universe that sucks the brains out of anyone who gets close to it. Now comes new House Majority Leader John Boehner, opining in Terre Haute. He has nothing but praise for No Child Left Behind, perhaps the biggest affront to federalism since Richard Nixon's revenue sharing, and the Medicare drug plan, an increase in entitlement spending that would have left Lyndon Johnson breathless.
And these clowns wonder why the GOP base is unhappy? If there isn't a complete Democratic rout in the fall election, it won't be because Republicans haven't been working hard to achieve it.
