HOUSTON (CBS Houston/AP) — San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro “doesn’t really speak Spanish” and had to get a Spanish tutor, a New York Times Magazine article from 2010 reported.
The Times reported that Castro, the keynote speaker at this year’s Democratic National Convention and the grandson of a Mexican immigrant, originally had trouble speaking Spanish.
The article stated that the Hispanic mayor’s mother, Rosie Castro, always spoke English in the home and that he never learned speaking Spanish while growing up, learning Latin and Japanese instead.
