Yeah, the vice president should have been more forthcoming about his hunting accident, and the White House should have been more forthcoming. As a sports writer, who does not normally talk about politics, said to me, "This IS a big deal. He's the vice president; he doesn't have a private life." About the only thing the delay did was reinforce the stereotypes many hold about the Bush administration -- the secrecy, the obstinancy, all of it.
But, God almighty, the way some members of the media, especially the White House press corps, are reacting, you'd think this was the biggest scandal since Watergate. And you just know it's not for anything as noble as "the people's right to know." They're just honked off because they were out of the loop and a dinky little paper in Texas got to break the story. When David Gregory, one of the biggest jerks on the tube (which is saying something), has the gall to warn Scott McLellan not to be a jerk, we have entered the realm of high farce.
Cheney finally talked, in an interview with Brit Hume of Fox. It was a careless hunting accident. He feels awful, as he should. Next story, please. Oh, by the way, the last time a vice president shot someone, it took a week for the news to get out.
