Her prospective candidacy offers the possibility of the first female president in history, but for all the power behind that aspiration, it is not a message.

I dunno, though. Being the first black president shouldn't have been a message, either, but it became one, and I suspect Clinton will get more mileage out of "the first female president" than some of would like to admit. Symbolism over substance, every time.
