Even if the typewriter turns out not to be one of Ernie's, it's cool that people even care:
A Portland, Ore., man believes he has a vintage Corona 3 typewriter that Pyle used to write extraordinary tales about ordinary soldiers during World War II.
Eric Warlick contacted producers from PBS' "History Detectives," who will stop in Bloomington today in a quest to investigate Warlick's claim. The show checks out the origins of items folks claim have some historical significance, such as a shotgun that might have belonged to Nazi air force chief Hermann Goering or a flask from the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion.
Imagine -- he managed to get stories dispatched from war zones without a cell phone or a laptop. I love technology, but have to admit there are days when I miss the clackety-clack of the pre-electric typewriter. Remember that dramatic ending scene at the end of "All the President's Men" in which you hear the hammering of the wire-service-machine keys as the headlines are seen being typed in? There wouldn't be quite the same impact just watching the headlines scroll up a computer monitor.
