Well, let's have a last round of Ahmadinejad. The great leader may have gone one step too far in his speech at Columbia. He can get away with his Holocaust denial in some quarters, but this willful ignorance just won't fly:
The remark that clearly struck a chord with the audience above any other regarded his feelings on homosexuality. Ahmadinejad said during the question-and-answer portion: "In Iran we don't have homosexuals like you do in your country. In Iran, we do not have this phenomenon. I do not know who has told you that we have it."
The audience responded in unison with a jeering laughter and boos.
I'm guessing a few newspapers will drop "Dilbert" after this profanity-laced tirade by Scott Adams that is, basically, equal parts apology for Ahmadinejad and bitter invenctive about the current state of America:
Ahmadinejad believes his role is to pave the way for the coming of the
Twelfth Imam. That's a primitive apocalyptic belief! I thank Jesus I do
not live in a country led by a man who believes in that sort of
bullshit. Imagine how dangerous that would be, especially if that man had the
launch codes for nuclear weapons.
I realize that sometimes people take me seriously when I'm just trying to be funny, and I may be guilty of that with Adams here, but, wow. I think the anti-authoriatarian impulses behind "Dilbert" may run even a little deeper than we have suspected.
And, finally, I may have been a little too even-handed yesterday when I said we shouldn't worry too much about controversial speakers on college campuses. Yes, of course, we would offer a platform for Hitler if he were around tody, says a Columbia dean.
What a country!
