Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' resignation Monday after months of draining controversy drew expressions of relief from Republicans and a vow from Democrats to pursue their investigation into fired federal prosecutors.
Gonzales was spectacularly inept, sometimes almost clueless, so not a lot of conservatives are unhappy to see him go, though they regret the rewarding of naked political cynicism it represents. Democrats who hounded him knew that the Clinton administration dismissed nearly all federal prosecutors; they serve at the president's privilege, after all. They were also aware that Janet Reno set a standard of incompetence that can never be equaled. Shameless.
