I shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but the victim of this crime must have been really clueless. "The police investigation revealed that without her husband knowing it, Martha Freeman had allowed her boyfriend, Rafael DeJesus Rocha-Perez, to live in the couple's bedroom closet for several weeks before the murder."
That's the kind of crime story you see in big-city reporting. There has to be a death involved and, sometimes, even something offbeat. Fort Wayne is big enough so that we don't get to see a lot of the "little" crime news, which is too bad, because it shows human nature at its quirkiest. I've always loved to read the crime news in smaller newspapers, such as the Brown County Democrat (in the other Nashville), which runs the sheriff's log verbatim.
For sheer human interest, how can you beat the Aug. 8 report from an officer who "cleaned up a mess of toilet paper on Jefferson and Main Streets"? And how can you not spend hours and hours wondering what went on Aug. 10 with the man who "cut his throat by biting his tongue"?
