The news that Hoosiers Without Helmets (watch for the opening of a new chapter near you) are dying at a much faster rate than motorcycle riders in other states is spurring the predictable calls for change. Of course it would bring just as much consistency to state law to go the other way -- removing the requirement for seat belts instead of adding one for motorcycle helmets; there is no legal or moral coherence in the law the way it is. Which way you go on that choice depends on how you feel about the government trying to protect us from all the ways we can think of to harm ourselves. It's instructive that nobody but a few libertarian cranks like me ever even brings up the "drop the seat belt requirement" option.
