None of the people who've been waiting for President Bush to say he's sorry for Iraq will be satisfied with this, but it's probably as close to an apology as he'll ever get:
Answering a question submitted online -- whether he thought he had been misled about Iraq -- Bush said he felt Saddam Hussein's regime did have weapons of mass destruction. "You know, 'mislead' is a strong word; it almost connotes some kind of intentional -- I don't think so. . . . Intelligence communities all across the world shared the same assessment. And so I was disappointed to see how flawed our intelligence was," Bush said.
I think history will judge the Bush administration more harshly for screwing up the war than for starting it. Losing wars is very bad public policy, and that's what we're on track to do.
Oh, well. I'm still waiting for my apology from Henry Kissinger, and I don't think I'll end up being satisfied, either.
