Taxing times

Thanks to the Reporter-Times of Martinsville for putting the sales-tax increase in terms I can relate to:

Starting Tuesday, that cranberry scone and tall latte at Starbucks is going to cost you five cents more.

And if you are in the market for a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, you will pay about $230 more on Tuesday than if you had bought the same car the day before.

Actually, in my real life: My McDonald's double cheeseburger, the pride of the $1 menu, will cost me 1 cent more. The newspaper at least gets the math right. An increase of the sales tax from 6 cents on the dollar to 7 cents on the dollar is an actual tax increase of 16.7 percent, not 1 percent, as so many seem to think.
