Mark of the beasts

If you're keeping score, mark this one for McCain:

Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, changed his campaign schedule Wednesday to return to Washington for Senate votes Thursday morning.

The Arizona senator will be on Capitol Hill for several votes, including a measure that would ban earmarks for a year.

For all his faults, McCain is at least a deficit hawk. He has always been against earmarks and did not put his name on any last year. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama also voted for the one-year moratorium, but they are election-year converts:

Obama joined with other lawmakers last year to obtain almost $100 million worth of earmarks for Illinois. Clinton worked with others to win $342 million in pet projects for New York and Pelosi obtained $94 million for California.
