Happy Valentine's Day, the biggest money-making holiday scam going. No matter what you've heard, it is still third on the list of retail-sales days, just behind the "winter holidays" and Mother's Day, according to Snopes.com. And, no, Halloween is not second on the list. It's sixth, after Easter and Father's Day.
The retailers get $13.7 billion out of us for Valentine's Day (2006 figures), and they keep trying to figure out new ways to get more. I saw somebody on one of the morning shows this week talking about "terrific ideas" for how singles could "treat themselves to something special" on Valentine's Day. We used to call that something else when I was in high school.
