Hunker down

There is some good advice in this Indianapolis Star editorial, but the overall tone seems to be, "Just give up and go with it."

A Friday holiday makes any weekend a great time to get away, but we recommend that you forego travel and stay near home to celebrate the Fourth of July.

Need a reason? We'll give you three.

The first reason given: Gas prices up, economy down. Fine, save that gas money. That should add a day or two to your retirement income before you kick off.

No. 2 is: Local parades, festivals and fireworks. Granted, there are fun things to do locally. But those things are always here. The point of a vacation -- even if it's just a three-day holiday weekend -- is to add traveling to fun to make it an adventure.

And the third reason: What's good in America is right in our own backyard. Sorry, but that's just a shameless repitition of No. 2 to give the editorial writer the opportunity to end the editorial on a patriotic high note. "We live in relatively safe, thriving communities with excellent schools and a top-notch quality of life. Americans can vote, speak freely, assemble, petition the government and bear arms."  What the hell do the rights to speak freely and bear arms have to do with how we should spend our free time?

Oh, well. I'm taking the holiday weekend as an opportunity to get out of town. To visit my sister.

In Indianapolis.

But I've seen her backyard, and it's no big deal.
