(Sub) par for the course

Firehouse Subs says it plans to open as many as 28 stores in the Indianapolis area in the next seven years, but it may find the market is too saturated already:

Connecticut-based Subway Restaurants has more than 80 area locations, and Denver-based Quiznos and Cincinnati-based Penn Station each have about 20. Champaign, Ill.-based Jimmy John's has 14 and Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Blimpie has nine.

On top of that, Jersey Mike's Subs has three area locations, and Dallas-based Wich Wich announced in November that it plans to open up to 10 locations in the next five to seven years. Its first restaurant will open soon at Meridian and 126th streets in Carmel.

It has seemed to me at times that Indy has a sub place on every other corner, even more outlets than Starbucks. I've never quite understood the appeal; one or two subs a year will do fine for me. Now, if there were a pizza place on every corner, that would be different. Pizza is nature's most nearly perfect food.
