I got an e-mail "action alert" today from the American Family Association urging me to think bad thoughts about the Campbell Soup people and then, by God, do something about it, because they refuse to "remain neutral" on gay marriage.
After sending your e-mail, please call Campbell Soup Company (1-800-257-8443) and their Swanson division (1-800-442-7684) and express your disappointment that Campbell's is supporting same-sex marriage.
According to an article by Erik Sass in the Dec. 24 edition of the Media Daily News, Campbell's Soup will not remain neutral in the culture war. The Media Daily News reports that Campbell's will continue to support homosexual publications pushing the homosexual agenda and same-sex marriage with advertising dollars. AFA had asked the company to remain neutral in the culture war.
In the first place, I don't think Campbell's gives a hoot about "advancing the gay agenda." They just want to sell soup. I'm just guessing here, you understand, but I suspect gay people eat soup at about the same rate as straight people.
In the second place, everybody please keep your politics off my dining table. When I was a board member of a local nonprofit agency, one of the other members wanted us to never order Domino's pizza for the meetings because she thought the local franchise owner was too right-wing. And I know some right-of-center types who won't eat Ben & Jerry's ice cream because of B&J's lefty tendencies.
Come on, people, this is pizza and ice cream we're talking about here, which might just be the perfect meal. Besides, if you eat them both, you're sort of canceling out the politics of the thing. And, granted, soup isn't up at that level, but still. I have fond memories of the Campbell's tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches my mother sometimes served at lunchtime. Think I might have that tonight, in fact. If fire and brimstone start raining down on us, put the blame on me.
