Celebrate the good news:
The preliminary figures show 808 people were killed on Indiana roadways in 2008, down from 898 in 2007.
That extends a downward trend that began several years ago.
State police say law enforcement efforts, higher use of seatbelts and safer autos help account for the number, and that's probably true. One officer cited "people traveling less because of high gas prices," which probably isn't. The trend goes back four years, and, while fatalities are down 10 percent from last year, they are down 15 percent from 2004.
Anyway, keep up the good, safe work, Hoosier drivers, especially when I'm on the road.
